Times have changed and so have job search techniques. The Career Center offers a variety of workshops to help you in your job search. We strongly recommend these workshops to people who have not had to look for a job for years, may want to change careers or may be seeking financial aid for training, as well as for people who want to find employment in a job they will enjoy as quickly as possible!

Career Development Workshop I - offered twice a month
This session is designed to provide you with an overview of all the current issues people should consider when they are making career decisions or when they are looking for employment. This workshop will help you:
  • Learn what the Career Center can do for you and how to use the many resources available at the Center and through our website (www. These resources can help you research jobs that are in demand and find local job leads (both advertised and unadvertised).
  • Evaluating your job search, make sure that you are doing all the right things to find a job you are happy with in the shortest time possible. Discussions will include tips for completing on-line job applications, job interviewing hints, determine your understanding of the hidden job market and learn tools to help you network in your job search. Learn how to surf the net and locate the hottest websites.
  • Information is power! This portion of the workshop will teach you how to use labor market information for career planning and job search purposes. It will provide you with relevant, up to date information about the economy and local labor market, wage information, including the high growth occupational areas and in-demand occupations for our two counties.
  • Career Development Workshop II- offered twice a month
    This session is designed to assist you with making informed career choices.
  • Access quality career planning information by evaluating your educational background, abilities and work experience to determine your "transferable" skills that all employers will value, no matter what the occupation. You will be also be able to clarify your interests as they relate to different jobs and access easy to use databases for researching occupations, colleges, financial aid resources and employment opportunities. You will get all this by learning how to use CHOICES CT on line and other online tools. Choices Planner saves all of your information. You will be able to log on to any computer connected to the Internet 24/7 and continue your research. Following the workshop you may schedule an individual appointment with a Career Specialist to further discuss your career plans. Computer skills are not necessary for this workshop.
  • Determine if training for a new occupation is an appropriate option for you to consider.
  • Resume Workshop- offered weekly
    Learn various types of resumes along with the requirements of a quality resume focusing on results, accomplishments and skills. Learn various ways to outline your job history. Follow up includes: SMART Resume workshop, email feedback and/or individual appointments.

    SMART Resume Builder - offered weekly
    Begin to build a resume using the SMART Resume software. Answer questions and let the program write the resume for you! Your information will be saved in this on line system for access/editing at a future time. Please attend the resume workshop listed above prior to the SMART session.

    Interview Workshop - offered twice a month
    Learn how to practice and handle interview questions that will get you the job. This workshop allows for the discussion of answers to many challenging interview questions.

    Get Connected Workshop - offered twice a month
    Learn to use the mouse and get an email address so you can begin to use the Internet in your job search. You will also learn how to complete an on line form and copy and paste information. This is a great opportunity to begin to gain comfort with the use of computers.

    Internet Job Search - offered twice a week
    Gain confidence and hands on practice learning how to find job leads on line and become familiar with using a variety of search sites.

    Advanced Job Search Workshop - offered twice a month
    Move to the next level with your job search. This workshop will demonstrate various on line Social Networking sites, portfolios and visual CVs.

    XP/Word - offered twice a month
    Learn Microsoft Word basics so you can format your resume and cover letter. You will also receive the Prove It Word & XP tutorials, learn to find, save, adjust fonts, size, margins, bullets & email/attach a resume.
