This program consisits of four, 3-hour workshops. It is designed to help new employees with the social and management skills necessary for sucess on the job. It is designed to help companies improve the retention rates of their new hires.
Check out these results:
Since October 2003, twelve local companies had an overall retention rate of 45% for their recently hired workers.
  • Overall, the retention rates improved to 74% for trainees that attended the program but did not receive the WIB certified credential.
  • And the retention rates jumped to 90%for attendees that completed the program and received the WIB certified credential.

The next session will be held Janary 13th, 20th , 27th and February 3rd.
Please note that for new employees (not in seasonal positions) who have been hired after September 13th grant funding is available to cover the cost for the entire four-module program. The employee must be earning less than $15.00/hr. and the employer must complete a post-evaluation of their employee’s skill gain. For other employees there is a $50.00 fee per module or $175.00 for the series plus a one time book fee of $10.00.

The Hazard Abatement Board has issued the 2005 Request for Proposal (RFP) refer to http://www.labor.state.ny.us/hab all applications are due by February 4, 2005. Public, private, nonprofit, labor and trade organizations are eligible to apply. Various Training and Education activities are allowable including, general or hazard-specific training on how to identify, evaluate and control employee exposure to workplace hazards; including: safety and health committee activities; programs designed to reduce workplace accidents; programs emphasizing disease prevention; instruction of employees and employers on their rights and responsibilities under the New York State Right-to-Know Law and OSHA/Public Employees Safety and Health (PESH) standards on Hazard Communication; programs which help resolve unique and unusually difficult job safety and health problems, such as the threat of assault on the job.

(BUSINYS is an effort to support business with the development of their workforce by providing funds for employee training. Training must result in a certification or transferable skill. Apply on line at New York State Department of Labor, Workforce New York website at www.workforcenewyork.com. Grant awards are up to $100,000!!! At this point in time, there is no application deadline and all workers currently on staff are eligible for training.

Over $30 Million dollars has been awarded to over 365 New York businesses under the BUSINYS grant!! Don't miss out!

If you are a manufacturer, have less than 99 employees and would like to improve your process improvement and/or productivity this is the grant for you! Companies will be awarded up to $50,000 to fund an outside vender to provide process improvement efforts. Training may include lean manufacturing principals, Six Sigma and productivity enhancement type trainings.

At this point the grants will be scored on their individual merits, however as the state grant allocation of $8.5 million dollars nears depletion the grants will become competitive. E-Grants Unveiled for Organizations interested in federal funding. The following website: www.grants.gov is a single comprehensive site that contains information about finding and applying for all federal grant programs. The Web site now has information about more than 800 available grant programs involving all 26 federal grant-making agencies.The site provides information in a standardized format across the agencies and includes a "Federal Grant Opportunities" feature to help applicants find potential funding opportunities. The site also contains an "Apply for Grants" feature that greatly simplifies the application process by allowing applicants to download, complete, and submit applications for specific grant opportunities from any federal grant-making agency.

The purpose of the HR Managers Roundtable is to provide a forum in which HR Managers can exchange information, answer HR questions and discuss best practices.

Now is your chance to make a difference! Join the partnership between business and our local school districts and help our young people develop into successful employees! Share your experiences with your business and your career. Provide your perspective on employer expectations, skill requirements, job interviewing tips, and how to be successful in the world of work. Select school districts are now piloting this program. Business volunteers are needed for as little as two hours a month. Volunteers/businesses can participate as guest speakers, mentors, portfolio reviewers, and mock interviewers. Businesses can also provide field trip opportunities and job shadowing or internship placements. Please call and discuss how you can help with this important effort. This project is a collaborative effort between the Workforce Investment Board, Greene and Columbia Chambers of Commerce, Columbia Hudson Partnership, Greene County Economic Development, Questar III, and the Taconic Hills School District.
